Hathaway Brown Broad Horizons
Hathaway Brown Broad Horizons (HBBH) is a six-week summer day camp for children ages 3-14 located at Hathaway Brown School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Since the summer of 2011, I have worked as a camp counselor for early childhood campers, ages 3-5. As a camp counselor I provide assistance to the classroom teachers in the supervision of the early childhood campers. I also prepare and implement activities with my co-workers. Starting summer of 2016 I became the aftercare program manager at HBBH, in addition to being a camp counselor. I now have the responsibility of supervising the early childhood campers during the after-camp program and developing daily activities to educate and entertain the campers.
Auburn University Early Learning Center
The Auburn University Early Learning Center is a preschool for children ages 3, 4, and 5 years old that is located in the center of Auburn University’s campus in Auburn, Alabama. I began volunteering weekly at the Auburn Early Learning Center in January 2016. While volunteering in the four-year-old classroom, I provide assistance to the classroom teacher in the supervision of the students. I also collaborate with the teacher, intern, and other volunteers to carry out classroom activities. From my volunteer experience at the Early Learning Center, I have gained a better understanding of how a preschool classroom should function, ideas for lesson plans, and insight for my future classroom.
Gesu Catholic School
In May 2015, for my high school senior project, I interned as a Teacher’s Aide at Gesu Catholic School in University Heights, Ohio. During my two-week internship at the school I had the opportunity to work with teachers and students in both the preschool and prekindergarten classrooms. I was able to observe multiple classrooms and various teaching methods. I also supported preschool and pre-kindergarten students with skill development. While I was interning, the preschool students were learning how to write numbers; I was able to assist them with this process and will never forget how exciting it was to see them accomplish the goal of writing a number after so much practice.
